"Lamu is the only place in East Africa where the old Swahili world still breathes — no cars, no clocks, just wooden dhows and donkeys."
— Amina K., Dira contributor

The Kenyan Coast is less a region and more an archipelago of moods — stitched together by 536 kilometers of Indian Ocean shoreline, bound by the lingua franca of Swahili, and shaped by a thousand years of trade between East Africa, Arabia, Persia, India, and Portugal.

At the southern end, Diani offers the postcard: 25 kilometers of powdered-sugar sand, coral reefs you can reach by snorkel from the shore, and a booming beach-club scene that draws Nairobi weekenders and European honeymooners in equal measure. An hour north, Mombasa is a working port city with deep history — Fort Jesus, a UNESCO-listed 16th-century Portuguese fortress, anchors an Old Town of narrow lanes and ornate Omani doors that reward slow walking.

Further up the coast, Kilifi has quietly become the country's creative retreat — artists, musicians, and remote workers priced out of Nairobi find the pace and the creek irresistible. Watamu and Malindi — the latter with its decades-old Italian expat community — offer some of the best diving and sport fishing in East Africa, framed by the ruined Swahili city of Gede in the forest behind.

And then there is Lamu. A UNESCO World Heritage site accessible by flight or boat, Lamu is the oldest continuously-inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa — a barefoot island of dhows and donkeys where the call to prayer still times the day. If you have one week on the Coast, spend three days here.

Whether you come for the beach, the reef, the food (the Swahili kitchen may be Kenya's finest), or the architecture, the Coast rewards travelers who linger. It does not reward rushing.

Practical info

Before you travel

◆

Getting there

By air: Moi International (MBA) in Mombasa is served by daily flights from Nairobi (1hr), as well as direct international flights from Zurich, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and the Gulf. Malindi Airport (MYD) handles smaller regional flights. Lamu (LAU) is a short hop from Nairobi or Mombasa.

By road: Nairobi–Mombasa is a 7-hour drive on a good tarmac road, or a 4.5-hour ride on the Madaraka Express SGR train (book 2 weeks ahead).
◆

Weather & season

Best: June–October (dry, cooler, 25–29°C) and December–February (hot, dry, 28–32°C).
Avoid: Long rains in April–May (humid, some road/travel disruption) and short rains in November.

The Coast is warm year-round. Even in the "cool" season, daytime temperatures rarely drop below 24°C. Pack light, breathable clothing and a light jacket for Lamu evenings.
◆

Money & tipping

Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the official currency. USD is widely accepted at tourist hotels. M-Pesa is the fastest and most widely accepted payment method — ask your hotel to help you register a temporary line.

Tipping: 10% at restaurants (often added to the bill as service), KES 500–1,000 per day for drivers and guides, KES 200–500 for porters.
◆

Safety & health

The Coast is generally very safe for travelers. Observe standard precautions in Mombasa's busier areas; Diani, Watamu, Kilifi, and Lamu are especially laid-back.

Malaria risk exists — bring repellent and consider prophylaxis after consulting your doctor. Tap water isn't potable; stick to bottled or filtered. Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow-fever country.
◆

Language & etiquette

Swahili is the coastal lingua franca; English is widely spoken in tourism. A few phrases go a long way: Jambo (hello), asante (thank you), karibu (welcome).

The Coast is predominantly Muslim. Dress modestly when away from the beach (covered shoulders and knees in towns, especially Lamu). Public displays of affection are uncommon. Ask before photographing people.
◆

Food you must try

The Swahili kitchen is arguably Kenya's finest: pilau (spiced rice with meat), biryani, coconut fish curry, mahamri (cardamom doughnuts), viazi karai (spiced potatoes), mbaazi ya nazi (pigeon peas in coconut).

Seek out street food at Mama Ngina Waterfront (Mombasa) and Shela village (Lamu).

Frequently asked

Your questions, answered

Three days is enough for a long weekend in Diani or Mombasa. Seven days lets you pair Diani with Lamu (our recommended minimum for first-time visitors). Fourteen days is ideal if you want to string together Mombasa, Diani, Watamu, Malindi, and Lamu — with time to actually slow down in each.
